What it is

Length across the whole beard area, shaped only at the neckline and the perimeter. It adds both width and length to the lower face, so it does the most for a narrow chin or a heart-shaped face and the least for a face that is already long or wide.

Who it suits

  • Heart

A wide forehead narrowing to a smaller chin. Fringe and side weight balance the top, while beard length adds the width the lower face lacks.

  • Diamond

Cheekbones dominate, with a narrower forehead and a narrow chin. Width at the brow and along the jaw evens the outline out.

  • Oval

Slightly longer than wide, with the cheekbones as the widest point and a gently rounded jaw. The most forgiving shape — most cuts work, so the decision comes down to hair texture and how much effort you want to spend.

  • Triangle

A jaw wider than the forehead. Volume and width on top restore the balance; anything that adds bulk at the jaw works against it.

When to think twice

  • long face
  • patchy growth
  • very wide jaw

Let it grow 8-12 weeks before the first shape. Trim to an even 20-30 mm, taper slightly under the jaw. Neckline two fingers above the Adam's apple. Beard oil daily.
